The Department of Fisheries, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Gadjah Mada was established on September 01, 1963 with the initial name “Fisheries Section”. Over time, various name changes were made in accordance with the provisions of the Organization and Governance Structure at Universitas Gadjah Mada. Department of Fisheries UGM is one of the educational institutions that plays an active role in the development of human resources, science, and technology in the field of fisheries and marine, as well as conducting various researches in the fields of aquaculture, resource management, socio-economics, and fishery product development technology. A total of more than 800 active students from undergraduate to doctoral programs are currently studying, accompanied by 36 educators and 19 professional education staff.
The Department of Fisheries, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Gadjah Mada, delivers its academic mandate through three undergraduate programs, one master program, and one doctoral program. The undergraduate programs consist of Aquaculture, Aquatic Resources Management, and Fisheries Product Technology. All undergraduate programs within the Department have been awarded the highest accreditation status, “Unggul” (Excellent), by the National Accreditation Board for Higher Education (BAN-PT), and are also internationally accredited by the Accreditation Agency for Study Programmes in Engineering, Informatics, Natural Sciences and Mathematics (ASIIN). At the postgraduate level, the Department offers a Master’s Program in Fisheries Science, which has been available since the first semester of the 2015/2016 academic year and has received the “Excellent” accreditation. Additionally, the Department has recently inaugurated the Doctoral Program in Tropical Fisheries and Marine Sciences.
The Department of Fisheries is actively engaged in diverse research areas encompassing aquaculture, resource management, socioeconomic studies, and fisheries product development technologies. Research themes include, but are not limited to: fish biology and physiology, water quality management, fish and shrimp hatchery and grow-out systems, fish diseases and vaccination strategies, management and utilization of fishery resources, socioeconomic dynamics of fishers and aquaculture farmers, handling and processing of fishery products, waste management in the fishery industry, packaging innovations, and product development. Furthermore, the Department conducts research in marine sciences, including marine biotechnology (marine microbial utilization, marine biomolecular and biochemical analyses), marine policy studies, marine resource conservation, physical and chemical oceanography, paleoceanography, and aquatic environmental geographic information systems (GIS).
In alignment with its commitment to the Tri Dharma of Higher Education—namely education, research, and community service—the Department of Fisheries at Universitas Gadjah Mada is also actively involved in community engagement initiatives. These include training programs, extension services, and community empowerment activities, targeting both individuals and small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), as well as village development programs. These endeavors are intended to enhance practical skills and broaden the dissemination of scientific knowledge, particularly to stakeholders in the fisheries and marine sectors.
To support its academic and community engagement goals, the Department of Fisheries has established collaborative partnerships with more than 60 institutions and organizations, both domestic and international, encompassing joint research activities, the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) program, and various community service initiatives.
