Yogyakarta, Indonesia – On January 30, 2025, the Department of Fisheries, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) successfully hosted the 21th SinnTech Webinar, a monthly webinar series, focusing on the theme of lobster and crayfish. The event attracted a diverse audience, including students, faculty members, and representatives from fisheries agencies, research institutions, and universities across Indonesia.
The webinar was officially opened by Prof. Subejo, S.P., M.Sc., Ph.D., Vice Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture at UGM, who emphasized the importance of research and policy discussions in ensuring the sustainability of aquatic resources. Moderated by Mgs. Muhammad Prima Putra, S.Pi., M.Sc., Ph.D., a faculty member from the Fisheries Department UGM, the webinar featured two distinguished speakers with expertise in lobster and crayfish conservation.

In the first session Anes Dwi Jayanti, S.Pi., M.Agr. delivered the sustainability of puerulus and spiny lobster fisheries. The presentation highlighted the ecological role of puerulus—the larval stage of spiny lobsters—and the challenges associated with balancing wild harvest with conservation efforts. Key strategies for sustainable fisheries management were discussed, including improved monitoring, responsible aquaculture practices, and international cooperation to regulate spiny lobster trade.
The second session featured Assoc. Prof. Bláha Martin, Ph.D., who provided insights into native and invasive crayfish species: Their implications for Indonesian biodiversity. The discussion emphasized the ecological significance of crayfish in freshwater ecosystems, their role in nutrient cycling, and the impact of invasive species on local aquatic biodiversity. Ongoing research at South Bohemia University was also introduced, offering collaboration opportunities for Indonesian researchers interested in aquatic conservation and invasive species management.

The discussions sparked strong engagement from the audience, who participated actively in a dynamic Q&A session. Representatives from UGM and other institutions contributed thought-provoking questions and shared perspectives on local fisheries management. The enthusiasm extended beyond the event, with attendees proposing future webinar topics, reinforcing the importance of continuous dialogue on sustainable fisheries.

The event concluded with a certificate presentation for the speakers, followed by a group photo session. SinnTech 21 once again demonstrated its role as a vital platform for knowledge exchange, fostering collaboration between academia, industry, and policymakers.
This discussion aligns with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 14 (Life Below Water), which advocates for the conservation and sustainable use of marine resources, and SDG 15 (Life on Land), which emphasizes the protection of biodiversity, including freshwater ecosystems. Additionally, SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) is reflected in the webinar’s encouragement of cross-institutional research collaborations. By addressing the ecological and economic dimensions of fisheries, the 21th SinnTech Webinar contributes to global efforts in sustainable resource management and environmental protection.
